Welcome to the first installment of Philanthropic Fridays!
Yes, I know it’s only Thursday but I will be off the grid this weekend. BF & I are headed to Maine to visit Acadia National Park! So, the 1st Philanthropic Friday will actually be on Thursday this week.
This week’s choice is Shriners Hospital for Children, specifically the Springfield, MA location.
Shriners is a wonderful organization that provides much needed medical care for children FOR FREE since 1922! This is all done by donations from people such as yourself. It really is amazing what they do for kids.
Shriners specializes in orthopedic care, burn care, spinal cord injury rehab and cleft lip & palate care. Shriners Hospital also conducts research and educates thousands of physicians through residency positions and fellowships.
Shriners Hospital of Springfield is near and dear to my heart because of my cousin, Shannon. Shannon has cerebral palsy, because of this she has needed leg braces to walk, and braces to help her scoliosis, as well as 24 hour care. Shannon’s mother is an amazing woman who has taken great care of Shannon mainly by herself, continually fighting to get Shannon everything she needs as well as getting Shannon a proper education. Due to Shannon’s handicap, the cost of her medical care is overwhelming. However, with the support of Shriners Hospital of Springfield Shannon has been able to see specialists and get care she otherwise wouldn’t have been able to get. Shriners has helped Shannon so much, she now doesn’t need a brace for her back and is walking great with her leg braces! Shannon is now too old to be cared for by Shriners (she’s 20!), but it’s because of them and the generosity of people who keep them going that she has been able to come as far as she has. My aunt certainly couldn’t have provided the superior medical care she received through them otherwise, not for lack of trying. So my family and I are immensely grateful to Shriners and all of their donors for all that they have done for Shannon and thousands of children just like her and will continue to do.
Please donate because every little bit helps! The Springfield, MA location in particular can really use your help. A few months ago Shriners Hospital for Children announced it may be closing the Springfield, MA location. Through the efforts of the Melha Riders Motorcycle Club and many others it was announced recently that the Springfield location will stay open! It is a great relief to the community, the staff, and the children & familys helped by this great place but that is not the end of the road. We need your continued support to keep this magical place up and running, to help thousands of other children that need the help. So please, in honor of Shannon, Philanthropic Fridays, and the many other children donate today!
If you are in the Springfield, MA area next this weekend there will be a walk-a-thon held to raise funds for Shriners Springfield. It will be held at Springfield College (my alma mater!) August 9th, 2009 from 9am – 2pm. Registration is just $15 & you can register the day of the event. Get out, bring your family & friends, get a little exercise and help a great cause! More info here. I hope to see you there!!
